Joy was born as Park Soo-young in Jeju Island, South Korea and grew up in Dobong District, Seoul. Her family consists of her parents and two younger sisters, Park Ji-yeong and Min-ji. In her childhood, Joy was interested in Modern Trot music. During grade school, she performed "Flying Duck" , an original song by the K-rock band, Cherry Filter, which began her aspiration to become a singer. In 2015, she graduated from School of Performing Arts Seoul.
Joy auditioned and was cast by SM Entertainment at the S.M. Global Audition in Seoul in 2012. She trained under the agency for two years, before beginning her career under the stage name, Joy
In 2015, Joy joined the program We Got Married and went on to win the New Star Award and Best Couple Award at the MBC Entertainment Awards. In 2016, Joy and Yook Sungjae released a duet entitled 어린애 (Young Love) for the program and received official songwriting credit from KOMCA for contributing to its lyrical composition. In November 2016, Joy collaborated with Lim Seul-ong in a duet titled "Always In My Heart". The song achieved an overall ranking of #2 on the Instiz iChart.
In 2017, Joy made her acting career debut portraying the female lead Yoon So-Rim in the K-drama, The Liar and His Lover, and went on to win the Newcomer Award at the OSEN Cable TV Awards. In 2018, Joy acted in her second lead role as Eun Tae-hee in the 2018 K-drama, Tempted, where she was nominated for Best Actress and Rookie of the Year at the MBC Drama Awards.
