'I was born an only child to an unmarried mother..' Life under the circumstances was hard. She worked, as her own parents were farmers and were too poor to offer help. She moved to the nearby city when I was still young to work at the nearby Izakaya place, for a friend of the family. The pay was low and the cost of child care high, our apartment above a tea house was tiny but was always warm and smelled of the tea brewing below. I remember those years as a time of constant hunger- but the warmth of my mother made it bearable. As I prepared for the middle years of my schooling, my mother began acting strange. The bills for my education had never been higher. I helped in what ways I could, working to clean the tea house below our humble two room apato, but there never seemed to be enough for what was needed. Those years I remember as being painful, my clothes never fit and I was teased mercilessly for my height. And word traveled around our neighborhood my mother was unwell.
Two weeks into my first year of middle school I came home to an empty home. My mother left for work one day and never came back. A day later my grandparents shipped me off to live with a distant cousin, no one ever speaking a word of what happened, or where my mother had gone. I grew in the home of my grandfather's cousin, calling him 'Oji'. It should have been a good life. He owned a popular hotel in the city overlooking the five lakes region. The money was never in short supply. But I was plagued by horrific nightmares and became a withdrawn boy, sullen and sad with not a friend to my name. College was not much different, at least until I visited the Aokigahara forest one night on a dare from a group of youths I desperately wanted to be a part of- mostly because of the pretty smile of one particular young woman within it.
There I found more than I bargained for. First, I found a distinctive hair clip inside an abandoned tent that I knew to be my mothers. That was the moment I first knew where she had gone, second...I met something I had been very certain did not exist. I met the demon that had driven my mother to that dark place. Once a Yokai of exraordinary beauty, he was now little more than a Yurei, a spirit demon- driven by a need to have once more the life a samurai had taken, many centuries ago. In my mother he'd found a home, but his presence had eventually driven her mad. I had no choice when he took up a new home in me, I could not drive him out...and I knew if the legends were true, he could only bring about my demise, the same as my mother.
To survive, I allowed the Yurei a place unchallenged within my body, his soul alongside my own. In this way he could live and so could I. I could not know what that meant then, and I am not sure now. One thing I am sure of, this will not be easy.
